Why We Become Attached To People Who Cannot Stay

One of the most confusing experiences in life is becoming deeply attached to someone who was never truly available.

Sometimes the attachment develops slowly.

Sometimes it happens surprisingly quickly.

What makes it confusing is that we often tell ourselves that it shouldn't matter this much.

Perhaps the relationship was short.

Perhaps we only met a handful of times.

Perhaps they disappeared before anything serious even began.

Yet somehow they remain in our thoughts long after they have gone.

The truth is that uncertainty creates attachment.

When someone is consistently present, our nervous system can relax.

We know where we stand.

But when someone appears and disappears, offers connection and then withdraws, creates hope and then uncertainty, something different happens.

The mind begins searching for answers.

We replay conversations.

We analyse messages.

We imagine different outcomes.

We become attached not only to the person, but to the unanswered questions they left behind.

Sometimes what keeps us attached is not love.

It is the absence of closure.

The unfinished ending.

The hope that one day the story will make sense.

But healing often begins when we stop asking why they left and start asking why their leaving affected us so deeply.

Because that question usually leads us somewhere much more important.

Back to ourselves.
